Insurance Regulatory Counsel (Life Insurance) - Assistant General Counsel - Hybrid
Responsibilities:
Manage legal counsel and advice provided to several in-house constituents, including senior management, within practice area(s): Life Insurance, Health Insurance, Employee Benefits. Identify gaps in corporate policies related to legal issues and provide advice on closing those gaps.
Work on complex problems where analysis requires identification and evaluation of multiple factors and that impact significant areas of the company.
Advise business and team members on issues impacting significant functional areas of the company, e.g., Operations, Product Development, Actuarial, Compliance, Distribution, Underwriting, Call Centers, Policy Administration, Claims, Agent Contracting, Licensing & Appointments, Complaint Handling, Form Filings, SEC Product Registrations, Regulatory Exams.
Represent the company before, and interact with, federal, state and SRO regulators.
Negotiate difficult disputes that may have serious impacts on the company.
Identify areas where new documents/templates/processes are necessary.
Manage legal matters handled by outside counsel. Select outside counsel for matters from pre-selected counsel list or identify and engage new outside counsel as needed.
Take budgetary responsibility for specific cost center(s). Assist with departmental budgeting and cost control initiatives.
Manage and train other/junior attorneys within practice area(s).
Primarily work with independent judgment, consulting with more senior attorneys and colleagues as needed.
Identify needs for, participate in, and lead departmental and cross-functional working groups in identified areas of expertise or development; engage with the most senior levels of the company leadership.
Review complex legal documents and agreements; provide input into leadership competencies for department.
Manage data privacy risks and ensure compliance with company policy regarding the processing of personal and/or other sensitive data.
Collaborate extensively with business clients, Legal, Compliance and Risk colleagues.
Qualifications:
JD from an ABA accredited law school
At least ten years of relevant legal experience
Licensed or eligible to practice in at least one US jurisdiction
Demonstrates exceptional emotional intelligence and resilience, effectively leading and navigating complex, ambiguous, and highstakes situations with sound judgment and professionalism
Ability to exercise agility and adaptability in providing legal advice within a rapidly changing corporate environment
Ability to effectively communicate, both written and oral, with the intended audience and all levels of the organization
Proficient using MS Office
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience providing legal advice to Life insurance Products and Distribution businesses required
Health insurance/Supplemental Products (Group Life) legal experience a plus
Working Conditions:
Hybrid office environment (3 days per week): Baltimore/Cedar Rapids/Denver/Philadelphia

Compensation:
The Salary for this position generally ranges between $200,000 - $225,000 annually. Please note that the salary range is a good faith estimate for this position and actual starting pay is determined by several factors including qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote) and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law.
Additionally, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at the Company’s discretion.
